Every seasoned traveler knows that the best way to prepare for a trip is by packing in advance well! Last minute packers end up bringing more than they need and wasting valuable room. If you are packing for your children, develop a system that allows them to take ownership of their things during the trip! Whether you have children or not, here are some tried and true tips to try on your next adventure.

The Suitcase

Hundreds of plain black suitcases go through the airports on a daily basis. Make yours stand out! Get each child their own suitcase with a different color or pattern. Pick out a scarf or a different colored bandana to tie to the handle. The key here is to tie it in the same place on the top of the suitcase. The more similar your suitcases look- without being identical- the easier it will be for you all to spot them. If you have children, have them pick the color of the bandana so they recognize it themselves and can help.

Packing Cubes

Suitcases with attached pouches keep everything compartmentalized and organized! Even if your suitcase has separate sections and a middle insert, get packing cubes. Packing Cubes are the secret to everything! You can fit so much in them. Two medium packing cubes fit on one side or just one large one for an entire half of the suitcase. On the other side of the suitcase you can fit everything else-shoes, large coats, diapers etc.  When you reach your destination, you can take the cubes right out and keep them in a dresser for easier access and to help kids with a routine. Keep it organized with packing cubes.

Outfit Bundles

Create outfit bundles for yourself and for each kid. Roll them up and include fresh underwear and socks. This way, you just grab what you need for the day. Pack for the local climate, but also be aware that it may be hotter or colder than you expect- especially if you aren’t acclimated to the area. Pack extra layers in a separate bundle.

Toiletries

A genius way to pack up toiletries is to color code everything! Get clear little pouches and travel sized shampoo and toothbrush with matching colors.  Each person has their own toiletry kit in their own color so everyone can keep track and take responsibility for all their stuff.  If you are planning to travel by airplane, be sure to put the pouches inside a gallon Ziploc bag just in case the pressure makes them burst!

Medicine Kits

You never know what medicine you may need when you’re out of town, and most travel destinations charge outrageous prices for basic medicines. Get a tiny medicine containers and fill it with the tablet chewable version of medicines, no liquid! These to-go medicine kits are super handy for any trip- even to keep in your car!

Develop a system that helps all the travelers take ownership, relax, and enjoy your vacation!
